EMU at Ball State open thread
Well, it’s finally here.
We’ve looked at EMU’s roster position by position, and we’ve considered the depth chart. We’ve talked about the NCAA rule changes and how they might affect play. We’ve looked at Ball State’s team, and we’ve quizzed a Ball State blog. We’ve even talked about what to do and what to expect if you’re going to the game (bonus tip: if you’re driving from Ypsi to Muncie, you probably should have already left). There’s also a photo (by Kenneth Bailey) of Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning being twisted into a human pretzel by the EMU defense in 2011 cropped to size for a Facebook cover image.
There are a few last-minute news items and tidbits for this game. First, the Ball State Daily News reports that the Cardinals could rotate four running backstonight. That’s OK, so could EMU, but there’s not much point, because only one of them — or Gillett — can carry the ball at any given time. Also, and Alan alluded to this in the Q&A, several Ball State players who might otherwise be starting are currently suspended…for trying to shoplift “male enhancement pills”. Really. (Hustle Belt analysis: “Ha. Hahahahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. [wipes away tears]“) One was Jonathan Newsome, who was already suspended for two games because of a marijuana arrest, which stemmed from being pulled over driving with expired plates.
Now it’s just time to sit back and enjoy (hopefully) the game…or if you’re in Muncie, stand up and scream as loud as you can! The game-time forecast is calling for clear skies and light winds throughout, with temperatures in the low 80s at kickoff, dropping into the low 70s by the end of the game, so there should be no chance of a repeat of last year’s delayed opener.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:04 Eastern (call it 7 sharp so you don’t miss it), and it will be broadcast online on ESPN3, as well as the usual WEMU 89.1 FM radio broadcast, also streamed online. Betting lines have the Cardinals favored by 3 to 6.5 points.
