MAC results: soccer and cross country

October 31, 2010

Three EMU teams were in contention for MAC titles going into this weekend.

The soccer team, as mentioned this morning, hosted the Western Michigan Broncos. The previous two meetings between these teams both ended in ties, and this game was every bit as close, with both teams remaining scoreless through two overtime periods. In this case, however, a tie was not an option, and Western Michigan defeated EMU on penalty kicks, 4-2, ending the Eagles’ hopes for a MAC championship, and their season.

The women’s cross country team finished fifth in the MAC Championships, one spot ahead of their 2009 finish. As always, Courtney Calka led the Eagles, finishing fifth and earning her second spot on the All-MAC first team in as many years. This Friday the women’s cross country team will compete in the Rocket Invitational in Toledo.

The men’s cross country team, on the other hand, won their fifteenth MAC Championship — their fifth in six years. Additionally, EMU runner Terefe Ejigu won the individual championship, becoming the 18th EMU runner to do so, and EMU coach John Goodridge was named the MAC Head Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his ten years with the Eagles. Depending upon what source you believe, the men’s cross country team may or may not be running at the Rocket Invitational this weekend, but the men and women will certainly be at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Rochester Hills on November 13.

Congratulations to the MAC champion men’s cross country team, and here’s hoping that both EMU cross country teams find continued success in the NCAA regional and championships!
